With October well under way, Winter is nearly here and one question is on every homeowners mind, “am I ready and fully prepared for it?”

No one is completely prepared, however rather than just running through the usual process to prepare for the chillier temperatures and snowfall, this year the focus is also on energy efficiency. [See our recent post on saving money on your heating bill!]

This month is Energy Awareness Month and the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) recommends making energy-efficient upgrades as a way to prepare for the season. Many remodeling companies are offering what they call, “Weatherization plans” – that is programs to remodel your home and leave it more energy efficient than before! The cost is often also at least in part paid for by the state or federal government (depending on your locality of course). With energy prices rising, homeowners are becoming more savvy and wanting to be more efficient.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), estimates that, on average, weatherization reduces heating bills by 32% and overall energy bills by about $350 per year at current prices. The DOE estimates that 56% of the energy use in a typical U.S. home comes from heating and cooling, making it the largest energy expense for most homes. This is where energy audits really do benefit homeowners, an audit can identify problem areas in a home where the most waste is occurring.
