We recently wrote a great piece for those who are not familiar with the region detailing the basics about the fantastic community that is Valparaiso. Or, “Valpo” for short.

Now there has been great news announced that Valparaiso is 2009 Community of the Year! The local Chamber of Commerce is very effective in representing Valpo and helping its regeneration. After years of different projects in the last few years the local government developed a co-ordinated plan to regenerate Valpo and ensure that it had a successful future.

Now the community of Valparaiso is attractive, well manicured and is attracting new residents from across the region and the country!

Downtown is a mix of old and new with historic properties being given a new lease of life to preserve that small town feel. Extensive streetscaping, a façade incentive program, new sidewalks, decorative brickwork and streetlights, and enhancements to electrical, sound and water systems were among the many improvements. As Valpolife says: Forty million dollars ($32 million from grants) in public infrastructure investment has led to nearly $700 million in private funding and the creation of an estimated 1,500 to 2,000 jobs.

Also there is the new, long awaited health facility; the 225-bed Porter Hospital along Indiana 49 will be a $210 million replacement for the existing downtown location. South Bend’s Memorial Hospital announced and recently reaffirmed its commitment to a new entry into the market with a $100 million facility and 900 new jobs.

Thats not to even mention the universities in the town who are growing at an unprecedented rate!

As the Porter county seat the city has it all! Valparaiso is a great place to live and gives its residents a high quality of life, no wonder it is community of the year – it has a bright future!
