Being a Clean city is important, but being a “CLEAN” city is an honor!

Thomas Easterly, Commissioner of the Indiana Department of Environmental Management congratulated Portage City Council on becoming the 11th community to complete the CLEAN cities challenge!

The Indiana CLEAN (Comprehensive Local Environmental Action Network) Community Challenge is open to all local governments in the state of Indiana. To be recognized as an Indiana CLEAN Community, municipalities must have a positive environmental, health, and safety record. In this case Portage undertook some great programs as part of the city’s bid to become a CLEAN Community and has achieved so much because of it.

Including:

• 1,750 more Portage households that are now recycling.
• 140,000 pounds of TV’s, microwave ovens, and other devices have been collected in a curbside electronics recycling program.
• 15,000 pounds of leaves and yard debris to be part of a composting operation in spring.

The new CLEAN City status can earn the city points on applications for federal funding, particularly on water and sewer projects

Other CLEAN communities in Northwest Indiana are Crown Point and Michigan City.

This is definitely exciting news and shows what a great environment and high quality of life that residents in the region enjoy.
