Exciting news for the Northwest Indiana Region!

The region is looking to possibly gain two museums – one a long discussed steel museum to mark the regions heritage in the steel industry and the more controversial Michael Jackson museum.

The Steel Museum is spearheaded by the Northwest Indiana Steel Heritage Project organization whose mission statement is: “To identify, preserve, protect, display and interpret the historical heritage, advancements and cultural impact of the Northwest Indiana steel industry and to educate the public about our steel heritage.”

The organization has been working to preserve the history of northwestern Indiana’s steel mills has begun collecting artifacts to display in the proposed museum showcasing the region’s industrial heritage. Already its collection includes a former Inland Steel fire truck!

The museum would likely be located in a community close to the shore of the Lake and would offer the region a great educational research for schools and other organizations who wish to learn more about the areas history. The proposed museum would feature multimedia displays that include oral histories of people as well as clothing, tools and equipment. Watch this space!

Steel heritage aside, there is also another proposed museum for the region, albeit more controversial.

Gary, Indiana is moving forward with plans to build a museum dedicated to native son Michael Jackson and his family.

The planned “Jackson Museum Performing Arts Center” is gaining momentum.

Developers now want to add an amusement park designed to look like Jackson’s Neverland Ranch and a golf course to a city owned 10-acre plot of land. The idea has been planned since the singer passed away June 25th but funding issues have delayed plans as the museum likely will carry around a $30 million price tag in its most basic form.

Gary city council members have indicated support for the plan, but say they have yet to see any specifics. It is rumoured that, if the project goes ahead it will be opening in late 2010.

Both of these museum projects show the growth that is occuring in the area, with home sales in the area approaching pre-recession levels and the economy holding up well it is an exciting time for the whole of northwest indiana.
