The end of the first month of 2010 has turned out to be exciting for the region! There are a few things of note occurring which are blogworthy!

Rail: We all know that the prospect of high speed rail in Northwest Indiana has been proposed for years, however funding for a $71.4 million project to improve passenger rail service through Northwest Indiana is expected to be green-lighted due to $8 billion in stimulus funds!

Indiana DOT applied for the funds back last year, while Michigan applied for $883 million in funds – both have the same aim, to increase rail speed and eliminate the bottleneck between Chicago and Detroit. Building a Chicago-to-Detroit corridor where trains could run at consistent speeds of up to 110 mph would cut the travel time between the two cities to four hours and 22 minutes from its current six hours and 24 minutes! Remember this is in addition to the prospect of a new toll road!

Valpo Devel0pment: Not long ago Valpo was voted as community of the year, now with  growing schedule of events for the Valparaiso’s Central Park Plaza the community is definitely on the up! Construction is occurring by the Indiana DOT to expand the downtown park on Lafayette Street and Indiana Avenue The streetscape will be paid for with federal stimulus money. A timeline for completion has been set at 2 years with main construction starting late February..definitely exciting news for Valpo, which already has a fantastic downtown!

Crown Point Residents: Exciting alerts system for Crown Point residents! The city recently implemented the Blackboard Connect Inc. system, which allows the city to reach its constituency quickly with time-sensitive information. This is a great proven system allowing easy communication in times of emergency – particularly the winter snow!

City residents who wish to receive alerts about the city through e-mail, text messaging or cell phones should register their information by going to www.crownpoint.in.gov
